Perspectives

I wanted to share this post from my neighbor Sue's blog. It's an email her Brazilian cousin sent out and I think it very nicely encapsulates many thoughts that are traveling around the world today:

My dear friends,


I would like to take this moment to congratulate America for such a wonderful example of Democracy on this Presidential election. May your new President- Barack Obama- truly represent the values of the founders and of the American people. May this new leadership bring peace, justice, economic equilibrium and dialogue in this complex and delicate time of change. May he represent your true values and examples that inspired many Nations all around the world for many generations.


Yesterday, you came together as liberal and conservative, and from every region of your nation, all believing that what divides you in this election is far less important than what really unites you. You came together as White, Black , Hispanics and Asians; Catholics, Protestants, Jews, and Muslims, all seeking for the reaffirm of your values and commitments, to hold them against a hard reality and see how you measure up, to the legacy of your forbearers and the promise of future generations.


Yesterday, you showed that it is possible to make it happen. That hope can become reality: hope in the face of difficulty, hope in the face of uncertainty- the audacity of hope, as Obama says.


Today, you gather to affirm the greatness of your nation not because of the height of your skyscrapers, or the power of the military, or the size of your economy. Your pride is based on a very simple premise, summed up in a declaration made over two hundred years ago: "We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain inalienable rights, that among these are life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.".


Today, even living on the other side of the equator, I can feel the same energy that you do, the same urgency that you do and, to some extent, the same passion and the same hope for better times.


Congratulations for making history happen one more time. I'm truly proud of you.
