At 9 months old Owen has changed a lot. I can hardly remember that cute little helpless bundle I once knew... this guy has very strong opinions on what he wants (to play all the time) and what he doesn't want (food!). But I love it! In the past month he has really caught the crawling bug, and while not 100% sure yet he's definitely able to get from A to B. He has also just started to pull himself up and get a better view of the world. The biggest downside to this is that he can pull himself up in his crib, which meant a few sleepless nights for me until we figured out how to lower it far enough so he can just about poke his head above the railings but no chance of climbing out. I've managed to construct a complicated barrier system in the living room so he can play about with all his toys and I can still get stuff done without worrying he is getting into things he shouldn't - although I obviously still keep a very close eye on him.
One great thing about 9 months is that he is totally on a schedule now (finally). He'll go down for two super long (2 hours) naps during the day giving me plenty of time to get stuff done, and then pretty much demands to be put to bed by 7:30pm at the latest, which gives Brian and I some quality time together in the evenings.
We're still struggling with the food though. And at his 9 months check up Dr. Morse was "slightly " concerned about his weight gain. Nothing alarming, just a slight drop off from his growth curve. He's 18lb 20z an 28.5" long, with a head circ of 18.1", so he gained less than 3oz in over a month. He had a few colds in that time though, and Dr. Morse said that burns up a lot of energy, plus he's a lot more active now, but we're going back for a weight check in the New Year. In the meantime I'm very actively trying to fatten him up. Our neighbor Sue suggested Yo Baby yoghurt (they recommend it from 9 months) and that has been a revelation, he loves it. So I am now able to get a least one pot in him a day. Dr. Morse says yoghurt is almost as good as breast milk and it has lots of good calories and fat to get him chubby. It's also led us onto other foods as I've found that if I mix almost anything with plain yoghurt he'll most likely eat it (although not with as much relish as the Yo Babys).
He had a great holiday season and was the star of my office party – where he spent all his time being held by the ladies and giving them great big wet kisses. He even prompted one lady to claim she could wait 18 years for him!
Look at me Mum!
Two more teeth coming through... ouch
