A garden of delights

June 16, 2008Summer arrived late to the Wood River Valley, but when our crabapple trees bloom we know it's here to stay (for a while at least!).
I planted my vegetable garden late this year, due to some unseasonable frosts in early June. It went in today, June 16. Hopefully I'll see some fruits from my labor before I leave for England at the end of August. This year we have tomatoes and strawberries (on the left) and onions and squash (on the right). The vine climbing up the house is Brian's Hop vine, which he hopes to make into a homebrew one day.

You inspired me to try growing tomatoes and lettuce which I bought as small plants. We've put it in pots on the patio. The lettuce has been great as I cut some off like you do with herbs and it keeps growing. The tomatoes are a bit slow but that's probably due to the fact that I didn't realize until recently that I should have been fertilizing it twice a week. I hope there's time for your garden to mature. It's so satisfying to eat your own stuff.
